Way Out West 2015

We ended our first summer in Sweden with a visit to Gothenburg (Göteborg) on the west coast. Our main reason for heading there was the Way Out West music festival. As well as great music and sunshine, our trip also included a lot of cafes and coffee drinking. I’d heard good things about the coffee in Gothenburg, so before we set off I came up with a list of cafes I wanted to try, and they did not disappoint. Luckily, because we were getting up early to explore Gothenburg and staying up late to enjoy Way Out West. We were also spending a lot of time on our feet and doing lots of walking. We stayed at a great little hotel close to the centre of town which made that part of our stay easy. It did make getting home from the festival a little challenging though. With long waits for the tram at the end of each night, we ended up walking about 30 mins back to the accomodation instead.

Music, music, music

Now back to the main reason for our little getaway – Way Out West 2015. I’ve been to a few concerts over the years but I hadn’t been to a festival since Big Day Out 2007! My memories of that are a little blurry now that it’s been so long. But I do remember it being on a stinking hot Australian day, with way too many drunk people around. As this was Giordie’s first music festival I was hoping that it was going to be a little less full on than my Big Day Out experience. And it turned out to be perfect! I think that Way Out West was the best introduction to festivals that Giordie could have had. For the most part the sun was shining and the atmosphere was really relaxed. The days started out with groups of people lying around chilling in the sun and enjoying great food from the food trucks 🙂

The lineup was amazing and the highlights for me were; Beck, Kygo, Tyler The Creator, Patti Smith, Alt-J, Emmy Lou Harris, Florence and The Machine, Caribou, Run the Jewels, Ellie Goulding, FKA Twigs, Ms Lauryn Hill, Tove Lo, The War on Drugs and First Aid Kit. The festival ended with Sweden’s own First Aid Kit. They performed to a massive crowd on a warm but very rainy night! We got the full festival experience with two sunny days and the third wearing ponchos in the pouring rain 🙂 It was a fantastic weekend and I’m looking forward to going back again this summer. Although I’m booking accomodation a little closer to the festival this time!

Gothenburg is a great city, it’s a little more relaxed than Stockholm and I’m looking forward to visiting again. As a bonus, it has great burgers and lots of cool doors!

Cheers, Jess
